PUTRAJAYA:
Travel to the low-cost terminal from KL International Airport will be easier and
faster as the Government has in principle approved the construction of a railway
track between the two terminals.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced yesterday that once
the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) had completed a study on the cost and decided
whether it should be government funded, the project would take off.
The Cabinet committee on public transportation has
agreed in principle that a rail track be built between the two terminals, he told
reporters after chairing the committee meeting here.Travelling
time will be reduced to 11 minutes from the present 20 minutes by bus.
Najib declined to announce the financing involved, saying the EPU would be working
with the Transport Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Public Works Department
before deciding on the track model, and would present its decision at the next
committee meeting. The
Deputy Prime Minister also said the committee was briefed by representatives from
MMC Corp Bhd and Gamuda Bhd on the electrified double tracking project from Ipoh
to Padang Besar. The
Government had in 2004 postponed the project because of pressing financial needs,
but has now decided to revive it.
Najib said the project would be carried out as a Private Funding Initiative under
the 9th Malaysia Plan. (News
