Image: Sungai Lembing Small Old Town

Sungai Lembing is located approximately 42km from Kuantan.  It is a mining town that was rich with tin reserves as well as gold and copper.  Small scale tin mining started here in the 15th century. In the 19th century, Chinese immigrants expanded the mining activities by using open cast mining.  In 1888, Pahang Corporation, a British company, was awarded a mining concession for a land with an area of 5,180 sq km to carry out underground mining.  This marked the beginning of underground tin-mining in the country. Mining intensified when Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL) replaced Pahang Corporation in 1906.  Sungai Lembing grew rapidly; it became a prosperous town and the population grew to over 10,000 during the glorious time.  The inhabitants enjoyed numerous amenities such as schools, hospitals, shops, a police station, residential areas and a good transportation system. In 1985, the world price for tin collapsed, forcing PCCL to cease operations in 1986.  This eventually transformed Sungai Lembing from a busy town into a sleepy and under-populated settlement.  Most folks in Sungai Lembing were out of jobs.  The younger ones left town to make a living elsewhere.  Sungai Lembing was almost forgotten, until not long ago when tourism gave it a second lease of life.

Now on weekends and school or public holidays, Sungai Lembing comes alive with tourists flocking to Panorama Hill, Rainbow Waterfall, the underground mining tunnel museum, Sungai Lembing Museum. But on weekdays, it is a slower, subdued pace of life.  It felt like time stood still.  Local folks go about their regular business, some shops are open, and most remain closed. Nevertheless, it has managed to retain its unique charm, in terms of history, location and physical characteristics.  Wooden houses built for miners and rows of pre-war double storey shops are still intact but many are unoccupied. The main road in the town center is shaded by large, lovely, decades old trees.  There is a scenic 320m high hill, known as Panorama Hill, which offers hikers the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views of mists and the beautiful sunrise. But of course, the pull is the town’s heritage, the enormous subterranean underground mines spanning 322km in length and 700m in depth, which are the longest and deepest minds in the world. Despite having been mined for nearly 100 years (1888 to 1985), Sungai Lembing still has abundant reserves of tine, amazingly.

There are train service that takes visitors into the mind shaft to a depth of about 100m.  The train cruised slowly and took about a minute to reach the stop point.  We then proceeded on foot into the tunnel.  The tunnel was lit up by electric bulbs, providing sufficient visibility.  The air was chilly. The surrounding walls have been fortified with concrete, replacing the original wooden 20cm by 20cm pillars.  The ground was wet and underground water was flowing through the side drain.  We were inside the first storey mine shaft, about 30.5m underground.  The mine tunnels were dug in vertical (storey) layers approximately 30m apart. Only the first storey is accessible.  The remaining ones below were flooded after mining activity stopped.  Water pumps are used to draw water out, to keep the first storey accessible to visitors.  Although the total length of that tunnel is 322km, visitors are allowed to venture up to 600m only.  Along the ways there are signage, models, mining artefacts, soil samples and a television documentary about mining activities inside the tunnel.

The Sungai Lembing Museum serves to disseminate information as well as display evidence of the celebrated history of tin mining in Sg Lembing, in line with its one-time status as the world’s largest subterranean mine, as well as the richest town and the major producer of tin ore in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. The Museum was officially opened on 23 April 2005. The museum building, which is two floors high, is located on top of a hill. It was formerly the residence of managers of tin mining companies in Sungai Lembing, from the Pahang Corporation Limited (1887-1906) through to the glorious heyday of the Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL), from the years 1906-1986. The building, designed in the vernacular-colonial style, is known as European Bungalow 1 (or EB1 for short) to differentiate it from the residence of other senior British officers.

Permanent collections: Sungai Lembing Museum showcases a collection of the original mining equipment used for subterranean tin mining in Sungai Lembing. Amongst the interesting pieces of this collection are the wooden moulds used for making spare parts for the machines that operated in the factories. There is also a kiew wheel and a winch, which are part of the equipment used to raise or lower mining workers, goods, wood, or iron in the tunnel, as well as for hauling the ore. The mini mox vehicle used to transport the General Manager to the mine or factory is also on display.

  Image: Panorama Hill
It is 271 meters tall in height. To reach Panorama Hill, you have to climb up around 1100 steps which is very challenging and interesting experience.  For normal people who always exercise regularly, might take up around half an hour, while people who are new to these and don’t really exercise might take up around 45-60 minutes to reach the top of the hill. In Panorama Hill, it has cemented staircases and hand railing in between. The main purpose for this facility is safety.  It is advisable to bring torch light since climbing is being done at the early morning which is very dark. At the top of the Panorama Hill, you can see beautiful nature and the clouds around the horizon.  It is very beautiful and you will enjoy this lively experience. Many tourist come to Panorama Hill to see this wonderful sunrise.

Image: Rainbow Waterfall
If you love nature, the Rainbow Waterfall at Sungai Lembing would be a fun place to visit.  The roads into the waterfall are mud roads and quite deep into the jungle.  Road condition is good in general, with some difficult stretches depending on the season.  Beautiful views of the Kuantan River. The only transportation to get there is traveling 16km with 4WD.  The journey is approximately an hour.  Upon arrival the landing point, you will need to cross a river and the trail starts.  The trail is very well marked and you need to hike for 1.6km, approximately 45 min at normal pace to reach the waterfall. The waterfall is awesome and spectacular after heavy rain.  It is a tall fall, and under normal conditions the water comes down as a spray.  It is this spray which results in the famous rainbow, but only when the sun is still low.
