Perak's northernmost tip is home to Peninsular Malaysia’s largest expanse of virgin jungle, the Belum-Temenggor Rainforest. Bordering Thailand to its north and the Malaysian state of Kelantan to the east, this area was partly inundated after Temenggor Dam was completed. Within this green dream of wilderness is the 118-hectare Royal Belum State Park. The park is excellent for birdwatching, with all 10 species of hornbill cawing from its ancient trees. Tapirs, sun bears, tigers and panthers also make their home here. Spotting Belum's larger animals is a matter of luck, and odds are low unless you secure a guide for dawn or dusk. But even when the wildlife is shy, Belum's magic is revealed through the majesty of its forest, where tangled tree roots harbour orchids and hand-sized crickets zoom across the glades. Look closely and you may be lucky enough to spot the endangered Plain-pouched Hornbill, the rarest of all species of hornbills found in Malaysia, only in Belum. Another species only found in Belum is the Great Hornbill.
