Getting to the foothills of Mount Kinabalu at 5,000ft, requires a 2-hour overland (88km) ride on winding one lane roads while views of paddy fields and Dusun villages over the ridges of the Crocker Range provide interesting sights. Upon arriving, visit the Visitor Centre and Mountain Garden; a huge place of residence where more than 5,000 vascular plant species, about 1,000 orchid types, 90 odd lowland mammal species, 300 over bird species, just to name a few, call home. This is followed by a visit to Mesilau where the only population of Nepenthes rajah pitcher plants which grows on a steep hillside is found at Nepenthes Garden. Some other species like Nepenthes burbidgeae, Nepenthes fusca and Nepenthes macrovulgaris are transplanted from other areas.
