‘Reagan’ sails in for a visit

PORT KLANG: The world’s largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan, is on its first goodwill visit to Malaysia.

Port Klang is the fourth port of call for the 333m-long American warship since its deployment to the Western Pacific from its home port in San Diego, California, early this year.

It had earlier visited Brisbane in Australia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

Rear Admiral Michael H. Miller, the commander of the Ronald Reagan Strike Group made up of the aircraft carrier and support vessels, said yesterday over 5,000 officers and men aboard the carrier would take part in community service projects and other friendship-building activities during their three-day stay.

“The crew is looking forward to experiencing the culture of Malaysia as well as seeing the famous Twin Towers,” he told reporters aboard the ship, which is commanded by Captain Terry B. Kraft.

The carrier has an air wing of about 80 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, including the Super Hornet and E2C Hawkeye airborne early warning planes.
