Hightlights 2: Kuala Selangor Firefly Tour

This tour takes you to Kuala Selangor, a quaint town which was the royal capital of Selangor, rich in history; this town is now most famous for its sightings on Kelip-Kelip or fireflies.

Visit Bukit Melawati, a hill overlooking Kuala Selangor and the Straits of Malacca which has a history that dates back to 1784, where it was once conquered by the Dutch. The hill was destroyed by the Dutch and here they built a castle named Fort Altingsburg. Today, there are only scattered remains of the fort which are now inhibited by the silver leaf macaques. At the summit of Bukit Melawati stands the Altingsburg lighthouse, which apparently is still in good working condition.

The main highlight of this tour is the forest reserve of swampy mangroves that attracts a variety of bird species and the nocturnal “fireflies”. A boat ride along the swampy mangrove offers sightings of these little light bugs which inhibits the branches of a certain tree, “the Berembang”. Be amazed at how the fireflies light up the dark pathway of the swampy area. The skilled local oarsman makes this experience a memorable and an unforgettable one.

Looking for food at Kuala Selangor is easy as there are plenty of seafood restaurants located at the small fishing village spanning across the Selangor river.
